It’s no wonder, then, that TikTok has also chosen to create a voiceover feature, as the app is all about comedy and creative storytelling. With our step-by-step guide, you’ll be able to use this feature in your videos in no time.

Why You Should Add a Voiceover to a TikTok Video

A voiceover unlocks a whole new world of TikTok videos. One popular trend uses this feature to manifest a pet’s inner thoughts and unique personality traits, with hilarious results.

Another great use for it is with a tutorial. In your video, you can show how to build or create something from your point of view, and add narration after the fact to provide more explanations. Some creators use the voiceover to narrate vlogs such as “morning routine”, or a “day in my life”.

With the voiceover tool, you can also add specific sounds and effects that you can’t find in the app’s library. There is even a way for you to use a Siri-like voice instead of your own, with the TikTok voice-to-speech feature.

How to Add a Voiceover to Your TikTok

There are two ways to use this function. You can either add it over a pre-recorded video or on top of a video that you create directly in the app. We won’t go into too much detail about how to create a video, but we recommend that you read about how to edit TikTok videos, especially if you’re a new user.

To add a voiceover while recording a video in the TikTok app, follow these steps:

Press the + at the bottom of the screen to start a new video. Press the red Record button to create your video. After you’re satisfied with the music, effects, text, etc, hit the V on the bottom right. On this screen, you’ll see the Voiceover button on the top-right. You can record several pieces of voiceover, on top of different parts of the video (but not on top of each other). To do that, drag the white line on the timeline. Every piece that you record is marked on the timeline in red. Don’t worry if you don’t get it on the first try, as you can undo and record multiple times. You also don’t have to record chronologically. You can go back and forth on the video. Finally, you can choose to keep the original sound of the video or replace it with the voiceover altogether, with the checkmark at the bottom of the screen. When you’re done, press Save, and then Next to finish up and publish the video.

A fun feature to take into account is the Voice Effects. If you want to use a funny voice, or simply not use your own, you can pick that before you record the voiceover. But you need to take into account that it also affects your original sound if you choose to keep it.

If you want to use a video that you recorded outside of the app, the steps are pretty similar:

Press the + at the bottom of the screen to start a new video. Tap the Upload button, which will direct you to your phone’s library. Select the video or videos you want to use and press Next. Trim it to the right size and tap Next. Press Voiceover and follow the same steps as before.

With this, unfortunately, you won’t be able to use the Voice Effects feature.

Have Fun With It and Be Adventurous

The voiceover feature allows you to add on narration after the fact, which means that you can chop down several videos to create a collage that you can later comment on. This feature allows you to be more inventive with your content and push boundaries.

Usually, adding a voiceover requires recording it as a separate file and editing the two together. But since TikTok has made this so easy, why not experiment and see what you come up with?
